    When mysterious alien spacecraft land in 12 locations around the world, the U.S. government recruits linguist Dr. Louise Banks to help translate the language of the extraterrestrial beings—called Heptapods—in order to discover why they have come: do they come in peace, or as a threat? As Louise deciphers their complex language, she begins to experience time in a non-linear way, seeing visions of the past and future. The film explores deep questions about time, memory, communication, and the human capacity for love and choice—even in the face of inevitable loss.
